Tips and Tricks for a teaching successful craft class
When you prepare for teaching, whether or not you have taught many classes or this is your first this post will help you!
You will need to decide on your project and make a prototype. If it is a large class you will want to make one sample for every 5 people who will attend.
Write clear instructions for the project(s). Print these off on quality card stock so the attendees will be able to re-produce the project in their own home. It is not necessary to include material details, however it is helpful and appreciated.
Decide what you will be charging. Request a portion of the class attendee fees up front. This assures you will get paid. If it is a class you are doing as part of a volunteer opportunity or civic organization obviously this would not apply.
BE prepared. Create individual bags that include all the materials in one bag. This way no one will be dismayed at having too many choices.
Arrive early to the class site to set up. Plastic table clothes to protect surfaces, hot glue guns up and ready to go. Each place set much like a dinner table. I use the plastic cutting mats from the dollar store. They protect against spills and hot glue guns.
Set up the individual places exactly the same. You will have attendees that work more quickly than others. A couple of years ago I taught an ornament class at my church. We had such a good time and by the end of the evening all of my “slower” learners were seated together. It so happened these ladies were all wives of our Shepherd’s. So much laughter and love.
Take notes and make check lists. These are invaluable in making the evening go smoothly. I hope this information is helpful to you.
